Rishikesh in the Indian state of Uttarakhand is where you begin your trek. At an altitude of 2,680 meters or 8,790 feet above sea level, this is where your trek begins at Chopta.

While going to Chopta from Rishikesh, you will cover approximately 220 kms of distance. The road to Chopta from Rishikesh involves taking a taxi or bus to Ukhimath, the nearest town to Chopta. You have to take another taxi or shared jeep from Ukhimath to go ahead and reach to Chopta.

The drive from Rishikesh to Chopta normally takes about 7-8 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. Here, you will drive via some pictorial towns like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Ukhimath, giving you breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The road is narrow and serpentine, hence it is highly advisable to go in for an experienced driver who knows the route.

Upon arrival in Chopta, check into a hotel/camp/guest house. The rest of the day is to acclimatize as the height here is much higher compared to the cities. Village Chopta is very beautiful and surrounded by thick forests of rhododendron and oak. You can walk in the village or visit the nearby market area.

Keep in mind that during winters, the night temperatures in Chopta may dip below zero. So, take sufficient warm clothes and blankets along with you. On Day 1, take complete rest, hydrate and go for a gradual build-up for the much-awaited Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek on the next day. An excellent night’s sleep shall prepare you for a proper and enjoyable trek ahead.

On Day 2 of the Chopta  trek, you will embark on a memorable journey from Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila, covering a total distance of 9 kilometers (round trip).

Begin your day with an early breakfast before starting the trek towards Tungnath. The trek to Tungnath is approximately 4 kilometers and typically takes 3 to 4 hours. The path winds through a dense forest of rhododendron trees, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Tungnath is home to the highest Lord Shiva temple in the world, situated at an elevation of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). Believed to be over 1,000 years old, this ancient temple holds significant religious importance for many Hindus and is a prominent pilgrimage site.

After exploring the Tungnath Temple, continue your trek for an additional 1.5 kilometers to reach Chandrashila. This section of the trek is steep and challenging, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. At 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), Chandrashila offers a 360-degree vista of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath.

Spend some time at the summit to soak in the stunning views and capture photographs of the majestic scenery. After a brief rest, begin your descent back to Chopta. The return journey is relatively easier and usually takes around 2 to 3 hours. Upon reaching Chopta, check into your hotel or guesthouse and unwind for the rest of the day. You might also want to explore the village and sample some local cuisine.
