Overview
The Pin Parvati Pass trek is a high-altitude adventure in the Indian Himalayas, offering one of the most diverse and challenging trekking experiences. Stretching through the lush Parvati Valley of Kullu and the bleak and arid landscapes of the Spiti Valley, the Pin Parvati Pass Trek presents a dramatic contrast between two very different terrains. The journey stretches for about 110 km and is known for its demanding nature, which makes it ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a test of endurance and skill.
The highest point of the pin parvati pass trek is the Pin Parvati Pass itself, which is at an altitude of 5,319 m (17,451 ft). Hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, vast meadows, pristine alpine lakes and ancient glaciers along the way. The journey is usually of 11 days, passing through dense forests, picturesque pastures and rocky terrain, finally emerging in the cold desert of Spiti Valley.
Along the way, travelers experience a unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures as the trail passes from the lush green valleys of Kullu to the dry high-altitude regions of Spiti. It is best to make the trip between mid-June and mid-September, when the weather is more stable and the paths are relatively accessible. During the period, the snow has melted enough to allow safe passage and the views are exceptionally clear. The Pin Parvati Pass trek is not only a physical challenge but also a journey through some of the most breathtaking and diverse landscapes the Indian Himalayas have to offer.

The trek starts with a glacier crossing at very high altitude. Containing crevasses and icy slopes this glacier is to be navigated with caution while paying attention been your steps. This part of the trek is difficult but amazing and an exciting experience for sure.
Mantalai ( After Successfully Crossing Glacier) is a place untouched by the filth of humanity and doesn’t have any concrete structures only lush forested mountains. Wildwoestijn gives the perfect blend of relaxation time and a great place to enjoy your surronding natural beauty.
It is a challenging day 6 of the pin parvati pass trek, which asks you to have both physical and mental endurance, but it lets you soak up in all that beautiful Himalayan location surrounding you adding upon your natural connection.
This trek involves a distance of about 16km with a gain of 780m in elevation. Trekking will begin early in the morning to avoid the strong sunshine plus because the terrain is rough. The first section of the trail especially the lower part is full of small stones, which make the footing somewhat tricky.
The next part of the pin parvati pass trek is, infact, quite challenging as the path assumes the difficult gradient including ridges and slopes. By the time you come across the spur, the climb gets a little better, but there is still moraine left. This moraine stretch is however only one kilometer long but it takes a lot of time to traverse due to its rocky and steep nature.
Trekkers will get to the Base Camp at the edge of the Parvati glacier which to the eye is a spectacular sight especially when taken at night. Tentatively, the Base Camp provides beautiful vistas and an excellent opportunity to ‘take a breath’ and get ready for the further travel.
7th day is very intensive but very useful day. The difficult part of the trek is to get to the top of the mountain, though the beautiful view of the surrounding landscape compensates for the efforts made.
On the 8th day of the trip, the destination will be the Bedu Thach through the trek starting from the Base camp at Parvati side up to the Pin Parvati Pass. The exercise starts early in the morning at 6am so that the slippery glacier patch that forms in the day light is averted. While approaching the pass one gets to witness breathtaking sights of South Parvati and Ganesh Hill. However if there is still some time amble up to at the top of the pass is a small temple.
Getting down to the Pin side base camp is little inclined to moderate and there are parts on the glacier and scree. On the Pin side, once you reach the base camp there is Pine Nala which needs to be crossed by a rope. From there, you will proceed for Bedu Thach trek which will be the next destination for the travelers. The trek from the base camp on the Pin side to Bedu Thach is a pleasant walk by side of a green valley accompanied with gushing water falls and streams. Before reaching the first camp at Bedu Thach you will cross several streams and ridges.
Bedu Thach with the fields of green grass in a totally isolated island like setting surrounded by mountains and a small river is a good place to have a break after the long and tiresome hike.
It is day 8 and frankly speaking, the day is tiring yet exciting. Still, you will see the wonderful mountains there, be able to get to the small temple, which is located on the pass, and go through the exciting and rather dangerous descent and the rope bridge. The day ends with stay at beautiful Bedu Thach camp site.
On Day 9, you’ll start your trek from Bedu Thach to Wichkurung Thach early in the morning. The journey begins with a steep descent of approximately 3 kilometers. Following this, you’ll cross a river situated about 1.5 kilometers away. After crossing, the descent continues for another 3 kilometers.
You’ll cross the river once more and follow the trail alongside it until you reach the campsite for the day. About 1.5 kilometers after the second river crossing, you’ll navigate a stream crossing, but the descent will persist. Once past the river, the trail becomes relatively flat and easier, providing a welcome relief after the previous two challenging days.
The day’s journey starts with the downhill walk covering about 12 km and reach at Mud Village, the last inhabited village of the Pin Valley. Once you arrive in Mud you will need to take a jeep to Kaza which is the district headquarters of the Spiti Valley. I must say that this operand of 50 kilometers normally takes anything between 2-3 hours.
Kaza the sub divisional headquarter of the Kinnaur district in the POPs of valley is an important tourist spot. Just arriving in the morning to Kaza, you will have to accommodate in one of the local hotels and take a proper rest. This day appears to be beneficial after having to go through the tiresome hike of the previous several days. Here will give you a chance to visit some sites including the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary or Key Monastery in Kaza. The night will be laid in a tent but this time is in the hotel, and is a much more comfortable arrangement than used in previous night.
The drive from Kaza to Manali contains beautiful mountains, high Passes and meandering roads but only give glimpses of several small towns /villages. If it’s done to the later timings on the road, it can be a very tiring event and one has to stop and rest at so many places, take as much water as possible and be careful of altitude sickness. It is advisable to hydrate sufficiently, and if one feels fatigued or exhausted there is no shame in taking some rest to acclimatize.
On reaching this place one can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of this beautiful tourist spot famous for adventurous activities like trekking, river rafting and paragliding at Manali. There is also a variety of local markets and restaurants offering traditional dishes in Manali to enable you to taste the regional foods. Also, it has several temples and historical place of interest to visit in the town. In general, the road trip from Kaza to Manali, thus offers an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful sights and the flavor of the town and the people.
