Overview

Churdhar Peak is the most fascinating peak in Sirmaur, which is also one of the highest supreme summits of the Shivalik ranges, having a fantastic height of 11,965 feet. One can often hear the name of Churichandni, meaning “Bangle of Snow,” for Churdhar, well-known for its dramatic landscapes that charm everybody with a visit. From its summit, trekkers are accorded the breathtaking panoramic view- lowland tracts stretching towards the south and majestic snow-capped peaks to the north, including the revered Badrinath and Kedarnath in Garhwal.

The slopes of Churdhar are covered with a rich tapestry of alpine flora and a diverse array of herbs, adding to the area’s natural splendor. It is identified that while trekking through the thick wildlife sanctuary, one may come across the breathtakingly beautiful monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh, the shy koklass, and kaleej pheasants. Higher up in the forested areas, this rare canine-toothed musk deer and the endangered Himalayan black bear have made these forests their homes.

A little below the summit stands the quaint, one-storey temple of Srigul, famous for its typical deodar roof and square structure. This is an ancient temple dedicated to Shiva as Chooreshwar Mahadev and contains a sacred lingam. The place becomes a whirlwind of activity when pilgrims throng the spot during the Navratras festival for some melodious singing and dancing, imparting spirituality and festive gaiety in the air.

While trekking, one has to cross small glaciers, rugged terrain, and everything that comes with it. Most of the time, the final ascent to the wind-swept summit is draped with moderate to heavy snowfall, averaging 33 feet. Sometimes the Srigul temple gets buried under the thick snow cover and gives a mystical hue to the landscape.

Another of these unforgettable moments for trekkers is when it has rained and one can see the rainbow forming across the horizon: vibrant beams of colors bursting through the clouds and lighting up the sky, like one huge chandelier, is a truly magic sight that juxtaposes strikingly against the serene Himalayan peaks.

It follows, then, that Churdhar Trek represents a unique junction of natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and spiritual significance-a destination promising adventure and tranquility for those who will undertake the trek.

Itinerary

The first day of the Churdhar Trek will be employed in driving from Chandigarh to Nohradhar. Chandigarh would serve as your starting point while Nohradhar acts as a base camp for the trek tour.

From Chandigarh, the drive to Nohradhar (very scenic), winding up the roads through pretty villages, is best begun early in the morning.

You reach Nohradhar and right away start trekking to Jamnala that stands at an altitude of 2,177 meters (7,148 feet) above sea level. The path from Nohradhar towards Jamnala follows a reasonably well-defined course, commanding great views of surrounding valleys and forests.

During the hike, one would cross emerald green meadows, thick oak and deodar forests, and even streams. The trail has its moderate demands; hence, a person needs to be fairly fit for this trip.
After a few hours of trekking, you will reach Jamnala, where you will set up your night camps. The serenity and beauty of the spot offer you tranquil grounds to rest your body and mind.

Evening time, you can roam around the place, interact with other trekkers, and enjoy the ultimate beauty of nature. The sky usually looks star-studded, far away from artificial light interference.

Take enough food, water, and light camp luggage to keep you comfortable. Also, do not forget to carry a good amount of seasonal clothes and gadgets for your weather conditions.

Day 1 sets the precedence for adventure with striking views of the Himalayan region, hence preparing participants for an upward, challenging yet rewarding trek to Churdhar Trek.

The crowning glory of the Churdhar Trek will be your trek towards the peak on the second day from Jamnala/Nohradhar. Remarkably rising to a height of 3,657 meters, or 11,965 feet, the peak promises a rewarding climb.

The trek from Jamnala/Nohradhar to Churdhar Trek involves a stiff climb and needs good health and strong will. Start early morning so that you get enough time for climbing and coming back.

As you gain altitude, the trail would take you through dense forests, rocky paths, and narrow ridges. The panoramic vista that the trail offers is breathtaking and includes surrounding valleys, snow-capped peaks, and landscapes beyond.

While going up, one may encounter different flora and fauna-like Himalayan wild flowers, mountain goats, and various species of birds. The natural beauty of the area makes it serene and awesome.

The top of Churdhar Trek offers great all-round views. This stretches far and wide on clear days, showing the peaks of the Greater Himalayan range: Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Pir Panjal.

On the top, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It holds significant religious importance in the minds of locals. Have your moments of spiritual ecstasy and offer your prayer before you start your downwards journey.

Having relished the splendid view and clicked snaps to engrave these moments in your memory, you’ll trace back your path to Jamnala/ Nohradhar. Your way back also follows the same route, making you once again get soaked in the beauty lying all around you.

At Jamnala/Nohradhar, you relax and feel gratified that the trek is finally over. You feel that this has been a lifetime experience and remember every frame of it.
Day 2 happens to be the best phase of Churdhar Trek. This day is considered to be the climax of the trek, wherein one feels utmost satisfaction and reverence for mighty Himalayas.

Day three of the Churdhar Trek: You will be driving back from Jamnala and trace your way back to Nohradhar and then drive back to Chandigarh. Thus, it marks the conclusion of your trekking day.

After having a hearty breakfast at Jamnala, you will begin your descent by following the same trail you hiked while ascending. Since this trek from Jamnala to Nohradhar is downhill, it should normally be easy considering the fact that the ascent usually is far tougher.

While descending, take a chance once again, go out, and marvel at the surroundings. The atmosphere is calm and refreshing with lush meadows and towering trees around you.

At Nohradhar, you get an opportunity to rest and relax, bid adieu to the mountains, and reflect upon some of the most magnificent experiences that happened along the trek.

Detail Pack your gear and drive back to Chandigarh. The drive is going to be pretty beautiful, with finery from the Himalayan landscape unfolding before your eyes for the last time.

It would be Chandigarh where your trek will come to an end, keeping the memories of dramatic views, achievements, and exciting feelings of experiencing Churdhar Trek.

Safety & Security

For the Churdhar Trek to be successful and entertaining, safety must be ensured.

Acclimatization
It is important because the human body stabilizes the level of oxygen inside the body to prevent altitude sickness and to maintain physiological fitness. Take an extra day or so to acclimatize yourself at the base camp, Sankri, or intermediary points. Go upwards gradually to not be overly exhausted in an attempt to expedite the process of reaching your destination sooner. Practice “climb high, sleep low.” For that, one may hike at a higher altitude than one’s camps and spend certain time at that altitude before returning to the campsite. Reduce the strength exercises instead; practice yoga or any other slow breathing exercises, such as Pranayama.

Weather Preparedness:
The weather in Churdhar Trek is quite dubious, with a high chance of snowfall and extreme cold. It helps you to know in advance about the weather to plan your trek well and be prepared for any kind of sudden climatic change. Guides will regularly check the weather forecast. Prepare for rain changes at any time with items like a waterproof jacket or a poncho and extra quick-drying socks. The goal is to attempt to start and complete your hikes in the morning and/or afternoon to avoid afternoon rain showers. Should it begin raining, stop and take a break but, during this time, avoid sitting around streams or riffle areas. Avoid crossing these either, unless absolutely necessary.

Hydration and Nutrition:
Hydration and nutrition are the trekkers’ key to energy and health on the trek. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Snacks to carry include high-energy, easily digestible things like nuts, energy bars, and fruits. Avoid beverages with alcohol and processed foods and drinks with sugar because they will fatigue through a reactive drop in blood sugar levels.

Health and First Aid:
Timely response to health issues can prevent serious complications. Always carry a comprehensive first aid kit with altitude sickness medications and know basic first aid procedures. Inform your trek leader about any previous health conditions.

Safety Gear:
The right gear will eliminate many injuries and keep you safe in bad conditions. Wear tough, waterproof, broken-in trek shoes with good ankle support. Wear varied layers to maintain body temperature, mainly above the Churdhar trek package Base Camp. A tough backpack is required, with a rain cover and headlamp, along with rope, oxygen cylinder, gaiters, and microspikes.

Emergency Preparedness:
Quick, immediate action in case of an emergency. The nearest hospital is in Mori, which is at a distance of 21 km from the Sankri Base Camp. Ensure that your trek leader has means of communication such as a satellite phone or walkie-talkie. Get an adventure insurance that covers high-altitude trekking.

Trail Safety:
Trekking through snowy trails is an art which calls for caution and skills. One should not go outside the tour guide’s set boundaries but follow marked trails; a compass, maps, or GPS devices can be used in case there is a fear of getting lost. Follow trail markers and do not leave the path.

Wildlife Awareness:
Wildlife encounters are hazardous. Distance from animals should be maintained. Store food in a secure place and clean up the campsite to avoid attracting wild animals’ attention.

Group Coordination:
This is one of the most vital ways to remain connected with the group for overall safety. Stay in close contact with your group at all times. Listen to every word of your trek guide and never stray away from the group.

Care for the Environment:
Care for the natural environment is extremely important. “Leave No Trace” principles should be followed. Dispose of garbage properly and avoid disturbing the wildlife and vegetation.

Altitude Sickness:
Short of breath, headache, nausea and dizziness. In case of any symptom, inform your trek leader immediately. Descend to a lower altitude if needed and take medical help if the symptom doesn’t subside. On Churdhar  Trek, after crossing Churdhar Base Camp 11250 feet, some trekkers are found with AMS. Up to the summit, a slow and steady pace needs to be kept.
