Trekking the Gaumukh Tapovan route would require from an individual a moderate to tough level of fitness attributed to trekking at high altitudes and very steep ascents. One has to prepare for the trek physically and ensure proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. The best time to go on the trek is during the months of May to June and September to October, avoiding adverse weather conditions during winter and monsoon. There is a need for permits to access the Gangotri National Park; this can be arranged by either local authorities or trekking agencies.
Route-based accommodation mostly involves basic camps and facilities at specific points, such as Chirbasa and Bhojbasa. Facilities are minimal in the region, and trekkers usually undertake the trek with their own supplies and equipment. Independent treks can also be done. It is nice to hire local guides or porters for the experience, as they can be very helpful. Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is one of those rare combinations where one gets superb and exhilaratingly adventurous combined with spirituality uplifted to infinite magnificence, which the Himalayas are so popular for.
